Chilli Plants
(rare)
Although we tend to eat chillis in savoury dishes, they are in fact a fruit and can be a useful and productive addition to the kitchen garden. Chillis also have wide ornamental appeal with a rainbow of colours and shapes offering a beauty that is unique and wonderful.
Each chilli variety has its own flavour profile which could include tastes like fruity, citrussy, smokey, sweet, bitter, tangy or spicy. Chillis are hugely versatile and they feature in popular dishes across the world including recipes for pizza and pasta, curries and stews, salads and occasionally desserts. Special family recipes abound for hot sauces, chilli jams, chilli pastes and chilli marinades.
Chilli heat is measured in Scoville Heat Units which is useful in deciding how hot you’d like to go. We have indicated the SHU for each of our chillis. Commonly our customers select multiple chilli varieties giving lots of options for combining flavours and heat intensity.
It’s worth knowing that chilli heat can vary within the same variety but also even between fruit produced on the same bush. Weather conditions, plant care, amount of sunlight and the point in ripeness that the chilli is picked all contribute to this.
Read about the Scoville Scale to help you decide and to learn more about how the 'heat' of a chilli variety is determined.
