Collection: Blueberry Plants

Blueberries are straightforward to grow and one of the most productive fruit trees that you can add to your garden. We think they also make a lovely gift!

They are pot-friendly and whilst they prefer a full sun position they will also tolerate part shade. They are an excellent choice to add when you have a small space for growing as they can comfortably be kept pruned back to around 1 metre high.

The blueberry varieties that Fruit Tree Cottage stock (Biloxi, Sunshine Blue and Gulf Coast) have a low-chill requirement making them well-suited to grow in South East QLD's sub-tropical environment and in our coastal areas.

Whilst each of these varieties is self-fertile and will produce fruit on its own, we suggest growing one of each variety as this will maximise your yield and extend your harvest time. Blueberries grow in clusters and you can pick the berries individually at the point of ripeness you most enjoy.

Depending on the variety and climate they are grown in, blueberries can be deciduous, semi-deciduous or evergreen. A variety that is deciduous in cold climates may keep some - or even all - of its leaves in a sub-tropical climate like South East Queensland although the leaves may appear less lush and with bronzed marks during the Winter months, before shooting away again in Spring.

They prefer a slightly more acidic soil, so we recommend mixing some peat moss through your garden soil if planting in the ground or your potting mix if planting into a pot. They also benefit from mulching the soil around the base of the tree. Blueberries respond well to pruning after completion of fruiting including both tips and also removing any older less productive canes from down low to the ground. Pruning encourages new growth and the next harvest is produced on this new growth.

Blueberries are a great option to consider adding to a family garden. With a bit of care they will often produce fruit within a year - sometimes even sooner - so children can experience harvesting tasty fruit more quickly.
